Renuka Prasad was brought up by his maternal uncle Sri Bhuvaneshwariah. He started training in the mridangam under Sri K N Krishnamurthy. He is the recipient of the state and central government scholarships as well as several awards including the Ananya Yuva Puraskara. He is an 'A' grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, has performed extensively and accompanied stalwarts in Carnatic music.
